Creativity in a Golf Course Design
from:If you look around a little, you’ll find that there are several well-known companies that create interesting and creative golf course designs. Names like Nicklaus and Kyle Phillips come up frequently in a search for designers. However, you could create your own golf course design that you could either employ in your own golf course or sell to another company for use as well. What is involved in creating one of these designs? What makes these well-known designers so successful in their endeavors?
First of all, as you look over each golf course design by one of these designers, you’ll find that no two designs are the same. Each design is unique and creative. The location of the course is strategically chosen for the view that is available from both the green and any clubhouse associated with the course. Each hazard and landscape anomaly is carefully planted to make the golf course design both interesting and challenging without becoming frustrating. Also, some courses are more demanding than others, meaning that some are geared more toward beginners and amateurs while others are more challenging and considered practice or championship courses for professional golfers.
Various parts of the area are taken into account when building a golf course design, including how much alteration is required to build the perfect course, how many natural obstacles can be preserved, how difficult it will be to maintain the level of greenery that is extremely important in an attractive golf course, and how enclosed the area is. Is there optimal acreage to create a course, or will trees and other natural objects have to be removed? Are buildings and homes too close for comfort? Will there be room for a driving range or a golf clubhouse?
Once it is determined that the golf course design can easily be completed in the chosen area, it is important to be certain that the course is pleasant to walk, as well as simple to navigate with a golf cart. It is also necessary to balance out the number of hazards and create a course that is not impossible to complete at or near par. In general, practice and professional courses are a full 18 holes and carry a par 72. However, some special golf course designs include only 9 holes (as though only half a course) and can be used for practice or for a short day on the green when you can can’t make the full course.
Whether choosing to play the course or attempt to landscape one yourself, have respect for the work and creativity that goes into a golf course design, and appreciate the beauty of the landscape.
